Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean'

Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' is a compact spider plant cultivar with short, broad green leaves edged in cream. The cultivar forms a dense rosette with a tidy rounded shape, then matures into the familiar spider plant habit with arching flower stems and small plantlets.

The foliage has a clean green centre, pale margins, and a slightly sturdy texture that keeps the plant looking full even while young. Mature plants can send out slender stems carrying tiny white flowers followed by young plantlets. The rosette stays compact, and older stems can hang beyond the pot as the plant matures.

Compact Ocean spider plant traits

  • Compact spider plant cultivar with shorter, broader leaves
  • Green leaf centres with cream margins
  • Dense rosette habit with a neat container shape
  • Can produce white flowers and plantlets on arching stems
  • ASPCA-listed non-toxic species for cats and dogs

Species background and cultivar growth

Chlorophytum comosum belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is native across parts of tropical Africa into southern Africa. In habitat, the species grows as a perennial with rosettes of strap-shaped leaves and fleshy roots that store water through changing moisture conditions.

'Ocean' is a cultivated variegated selection of Chlorophytum comosum. 'Ocean' has a compact rosette, broader leaves and a cream-edged pattern. The plantlets form from flowering stems, so a mature specimen can shift from a tight leafy centre into a softer cascading display over time.

Keeping 'Ocean' compact and leafy

  • Light: Keep in bright filtered light or a bright room position away from harsh midday sun. Strong direct sun can mark the pale margins.
  • Watering: Let the upper part of the substrate dry before watering again. The fleshy roots hold moisture, so the pot should drain freely after each soak.
  • Substrate: Choose a loose mix that holds some moisture while staying airy. Perlite, fine bark, coco fibre, or mineral particles give the thick roots airflow and drainage.
  • Temperature: Keep conditions stable and above 15 °C. Cool wet substrate slows growth and increases root problems.
  • Humidity: Typical indoor humidity is fine. A humidifier can reduce dry-tip stress during heated indoor months.
  • Feeding: Use a light fertiliser dose during active growth. Heavy feeding can increase salt build-up and may reduce plantlet formation.
  • Repotting: Repot when fleshy roots crowd the pot. Move up one size and keep the rosette base level with the substrate surface.
  • Pruning: Remove old flower stems after plantlets are taken or once the stems dry. Trim brown tips cleanly if needed.
  • Propagation: Root plantlets once they have visible root initials, or divide a mature clump during repotting.
  • Outdoor summer placement: Warm sheltered outdoor shade can suit it during summer. Acclimate first and bring indoors before nights cool below 15°C.

Brown tips, soft centres and plantlet issues

  • Brown leaf tips: Often linked to irregular watering, dry air, salt build-up, or minerals in tap water. Flush the substrate and use rainwater, filtered water, or low-mineral water where needed.
  • Soft, collapsing centre: Check for water sitting in the rosette or a cold wet root ball. Improve airflow and let the substrate dry more evenly.
  • Few plantlets: Young plants may need more maturity. Overfeeding can also keep growth focused on leaves.
  • Scorched pale patches: Usually caused by direct sun on tender leaves. Move to filtered light and remove only fully damaged foliage.

Offset and seasonal growth notes

The cream margins on 'Ocean' are part of the cultivar’s stable leaf pattern. New leaves may vary slightly in width and curve as the plant matures, especially after repotting or seasonal growth changes.

Pet-safe status and plantlets

ASPCA records Chlorophytum comosum as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing may still cause mild digestive upset or damage the rosette, so place young plantlets away from pets attracted to stringy leaves.

Spider plant name background

The accepted species name is Chlorophytum comosum (Thunb.) Jacques, in the family Asparagaceae. Chlorophytum is derived from Greek roots meaning green or yellow-green plant. The species epithet comosum means furnished with a tuft, referring to the rosette-like arrangement of the leaves. 'Ocean' is a compact cream-edged spider plant selection.

Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' forms a compact green-and-cream rosette that can mature into an offsetting spider plant.

Best frother on the market
This company has the best frothers I have ever used, and I have gone through my fair share of frothers over the years trying to find a good one. I bought this frother as soon as I saw they had an upgraded model, although the older model I was using for the past few years was great too (I now use that frother to mix up my dog's supplements :) ). I have found most frothers to be weak, cheaply made, and eat batteries like candy, even ones rated really well here on Amazon. This one however deserves the great reviews. It is well-made and powerful and the newly added 9 different speeds fixes the "problem" the old one had of being a little too powerful at times. The newly designed stand is definitely a major upgrade. The old one was kinda awkward and would wobble, sometimes falling over when trying to put the frother back in it, but this new one is much sturdier and looks nicer, too. The battery life is also excellent. I can rarely remember the last time I had to charge the frother—it lasts a while. And the new indicator makes it easy to know exactly when it needs a recharging now. I haven't looked at another frother in years since switching to this brand. I can't recommend their frothers enough.

✨Happy with my purchase!
At the time of writing this review, I've had my frother for almost a month now, and I love it! Out of the box, it had a good amount of charge already on it, but I did charged it fully before using. I use it just once a day for my morning coffee fix, and it says I still have 80% charge left. I love that feature. I have used the frothing whisk for coffee, which is fantastic, and the regular wisk for scrambled eggs. It works, but I prefer a hand manual whisk for eggs, because I have more control. Even on the lowest speed, it made the bowl spin WAY too much, and I almost had a mess. No problems like that using the frothing wand for my milk though. The dough hook. I have no idea why a dough hook is part of the package... what would it be useful for, one cookie, one bread roll?? I will never used it. The stand itself works for holding the unit, but the holders for the individual wands could be better. I already snapped the plastic on one of them, but not matter, since I'm not using the dough hook anyway. LOL! All in all, I'm happy with my purchase! It's easy to use and clean. It's a quality built frother, the price is fair, I like the variable speed settings, and I love the fact that it shows how much charge is left. Future product improvements I would recommend: make it waterproof, and lose the useless dough hook.

Best Frother on the Market.
With the absolute highest speed and power for a frother, this is the best frother on the market, but this model, the MF06 has three features that are great improvements over previous models. 1. LED reading of the speed setting and battery life remaining. 2. One-button stop. This is huge! Other frothers require me to cycle through the speeds 'till I get to the "off" or zero speed. This means when my coffee is at the edge almost overflowing, I have to speed-up to shut-off! Not so with this frother. 3. A loop attachment that is perfect for mixing with minimal frothing. Costumer service is excellent, highly responsive, and human! Their 2- year warranty is for real. This is my third frother with this company. The first one (an earlier model) burned out and they replaced it. Twice! They replaced the second one with an upgraded model (MF05). It worked much better, but this model, the MF06 is a slimmer design, better attachments, more features, and without a doubt, the best I the market! Highly recommend.

My third FoodVille frother in six years and this one is the best!
Apparently I have a long running relationship with milk frothers. Looking back at my Amazon orders, this is my third FoodVille frother since 2020, and they have all been part of my daily coffee routine. I make two mochas every morning, so these things get used a lot. This new MF06 model has been in daily use for about three weeks now, and it’s easily the best version I’ve owned. The biggest improvement is the adjustable speed control. Earlier models were basically one speed and you either got foam or a small milk tornado. With this one you can start slow and then increase power depending on what you’re mixing. It actually gives you control instead of just maximum blast. Things I like after using it every day: • 9 speed settings make it much more versatile • Strong motor that creates thick foam quickly • Rechargeable battery with USB-C, so no dealing with AA batteries • Battery indicator so you know when it needs charging • Multiple whisk attachments for different uses • Stand keeps everything organized on the counter The foam is thick and creamy enough that my homemade mochas now look like something from a coffee shop instead of something made by a half-awake human at 6 AM. I’ve also used it for mixing protein powder and hot chocolate, and the lower speeds help avoid splashing. The stand does take up a little counter space, but I personally like having everything organized instead of digging around in a drawer for the attachments. For around the $20 to $25 range, this has been a great little kitchen tool. After several years and multiple versions, this is the best FoodVille frother I’ve owned so far, and it gets used every single morning. What gives me confidence recommending it is that this is my third FoodVille frother since 2020, and each version has improved on the last. If you make coffee drinks at home, this is a great little tool to have.
