Attention Gardeners, are you looking for Ficus plants that will make your garden stand out? Look no further than rubber fig, also known as Ficus Elastica burgundy! With its stunning, burgundy-colored leaves, it has several other names such as Indian rubber fig, Indian rubber tree plant, burgundy rubber plant, burgundy rubber tree, and Abidjan black prince. It belongs to the Ficus family and is native to Southeast Asia.

Ficus burgundy is a popular perennial plant with dark green leaves, deep reddish variegation, and a glossy sheen. It features a large green trunk resembling an elephant's foot or tusk and is also known as the fiddle leaf fig. This dramatic and vigorous plant is perfect for any home or office room. This burgundy Ficus rubber plant is a fast-growing tropical plant, that can grow up to 10 feet indoors with glossy, oval-shaped leaves measuring 4 inches in width.

The flowers of the Ficus burgundy are small and insignificant and bloom during spring and summer. However, it is primarily grown for its attractive, burgundy-colored leaves rather than its flowers.

To propagate the Ficus burgundy, you can use stem cuttings. Simply take a healthy stem cutting with a few leaves and place it in a glass of water. After a few weeks, roots will start to develop, and you can transfer the cutting to a pot with well-draining soil. Another method is to propagate using air layering, where you encourage roots to grow on a section of the stem while it is still attached to the parent plant.

Additionally, the Ficus plant's stems and leaves can be toxic to humans or pets if consumed in large amounts, causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and paralysis, so it's crucial to prevent children and pets.

Watering Needs

When it comes to Ficus burgundy care, it has moderate watering needs. The soil must remain consistently moist without becoming soggy. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's best to let the top inch of soil dry out before watering again. You can test the soil's moisture content by inserting your finger into it. If it feels dry, it's time to water your rubber fig tree.

When watering, be sure to completely saturate the soil and let it drain out of the pot. This helps to flush out any accumulated salts and ensures that the roots receive sufficient hydration. However, avoid leaving your Ficus burgundy rubber fig sitting in standing water, as this can also lead to root problems.

During the winter months, when your Ficus plant is in its dormant phase, you can reduce the frequency of watering. Allow the soil to dry out a bit more between waterings, but still ensure that it doesn't completely dry out.

Remember, each environment is unique, so it's important to observe your burgundy ficus and adjust your watering routine accordingly. If the leaves start to droop or turn yellow, it could be a sign of overwatering or underwatering. Finding the right balance will help keep your Ficus Burgundy happy and healthy!

Light Requirements

The Ficus Burgundy thrives in bright, indirect light to maintain its dark foliage. It enjoys being near a window where it can receive plenty of filtered sunlight throughout the day. However, it's important to avoid placing it in direct sunlight as the intense rays can scorch the leaves.

If you don't have a well-lit area in your home, don't worry! The Ficus Burgundy can tolerate lower light conditions but may grow more slowly, and its leaves might not develop their full burgundy color. You can also supplement its light requirements with artificial grow lights to ensure it gets the necessary light for healthy growth.

Remember to rotate your rubber plant every few weeks to ensure even light exposure on all sides. This will help prevent your rubber fig from leaning towards the light source and promote balanced growth.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

Use a well-drained soil that is designed specifically for your succulent. These specialty soil mixes have been precisely developed to imitate well-draining desert soils. Commercial succulent soil is affordable and available online or at Home Depot. We believe the best option is to use our specialty succulent potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your burgundy ficus rubber plant to thrive.  If you don't mind getting a bit of dirt on your hands and are okay with a basic soil for your succulents, then you can save some money and make your own mix by simply combining healthy natural garden soil with equal parts of sand or perlite.

When it comes to fertilizing, the Ficus Burgundy benefits from a balanced, water-soluble NPK fertilizer. You can apply it once a year during the growing season (spring). During the winter months, when your ficus plant is in its dormant phase, you can reduce or completely stop fertilizing. This allows your ficus rubber plant to rest and prepare for new growth in the following season.

Remember to always water your ficus indoor plant before applying fertilizer to avoid burning the roots. And don't forget to wipe off any excess fertilizer from the leaves to prevent damage.

Hardiness Zones & More

The Ficus Burgundy is typically suited for USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11, which means it can tolerate temperatures as low as 35°F. However, it's important to note that this Ficus plant prefers warmer temperatures and may suffer damage if exposed to prolonged cold or frost.

In terms of temperature, the Ficus Burgundy thrives in average room temperatures between 60°F and 75°F. It can tolerate slightly higher or lower temperatures, but extreme fluctuations or prolonged exposure to very high or low temperatures can negatively impact its growth.

When it comes to humidity, the Ficus Burgundy prefers moderate to high humidity levels. It can tolerate average household humidity, but it will appreciate some extra humidity, especially during dry winter months. You can increase humidity by placing a tray of water near the rubber fig plant or using a humidifier.

Remember to avoid placing the plant near drafts or vents, as sudden temperature changes and dry air can stress the Ficus Burgundy. With the right temperature and humidity conditions, your plant will thrive and maintain its beautiful foliage.

The squeak might die the ball does not.
Color: Orange Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
If you want to cut to the chase YES THIS PRODUCT WORKS, if you want more details then continue reading. So for starters, we have a 75 pound Doberman whom we call "The Destroyer of All Things". Anything she can tear into (toy wise) she will dismantle in a matter of minutes. It's been very frustrating trying to find toys that will last long enough to occupy her playtime without us feeling like we may as just hand her money to shred up and throw in the garbage. I will say that my dog, however, is also a "picky" destroyer and will not simply chew and destroy and play with just any toy. I bought her a solid hard rubber ball once that weighed a ton and because it was so stiff and had zero give and was actually indestructible (to her standers) but, she played with it for a matter of 30 seconds before never touching it again. If it's too solid and indestructible she gets no satisfaction from it and won't play with it, which is also a waste of money since it's been sitting at the bottom of her toy bin ever since. So trying to find a toy that is a balance of fun for her and durable for our pockets was a hard task, until now. My husband somehow stumbled upon this ball and hopeful from all the glowing reviews (but still skeptical so we wouldn't be disappointed if it didn't work) we ordered it immediately. We have NOT been disappointed thus far and she's had it for a month!! Just like some reviews have said, the squeak did not last long, but that wasn't surprising. Our dog's favorite toys used to be the yellow tennis style kong balls and she'd have the squeak killed in a matter of seconds until it only wheezed and then she'd tear up the ball itself. Which is why we needed to find a replacement that she could shred into tiny rubber pieces all over my floor. This ball really truly was not annoying when is squeaked, until the piercing shrieking noise the Kong tennis balls made this one was pretty chill on the noise level and I didn't mind it at all while it worked. If the squeaker hadn't died I wouldn't have been driven up the wall with the noise and bonus my dog still loved it either way. But, the squeak didn't last long, maybe a few minutes at most. However, I continued and continue to monitor this ball for any other signs of defeat and have yet to find ANY. Not a tooth mark, not a nick, nothing, nada, ZILCH. This ball is soft enough that it has some give when she chomps down on it, but it's durable enough to bounce back and not snap or crack or break under pressure. The give my dog gets from chewing on it keeps her attention because I think it gives her some false sense of hope that she might still be able to destroy it. So even after a month, she's not lost interest. Also, even though the squeak has died when she chomps down on the ball it sort of makes a clicking/suctioning noise which also makes her very happy to play with it. She loves it when we toss it down the hallway because of the softer rubber it has a rather unpredictable bounce and so she never quite knows where it's going to go. Highly recommended and I cannot wait to test out other products from this brand and buy her a couple of more balls to have around the house in replacement to her old Kong balls.

Good dog product
Color: Pink Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
We’ve had the squeak balls for many years. The squeaker doesn’t last long with an aggressive chewer. Our dog squeaks the ball so much, she makes the ball split. We remove the squeaker and the ball continues to be used for a few years until it splits enough we throw them out. The ball has good bounce. We leave them outside all year and they have lasted thru snow and hot weather. The ball has been 2 of our dog’s favorite toy.

Extremely durable even for destructo-dogs!
Color: Orange Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
I got this for our chew-monster Bruce, a very large German Shepherd & (we think) Great Dane mix, after he repeatedly demonstrated his ability to utterly destroy the large Kong squeaky tennis balls within a matter of minutes. He LOVES some squeak, so he obsessively squeaks his toys until they're crushed. After some research on longer-lasting toys, I splurged on one of these, fully intending to guilt the dog forever if he destroyed this much more expensive toy. It's been 2 months, and this ball is not only still squeaking, but it isn't chewed or destroyed AT ALL, despite Bruce's best attempts! It's smaller than his other balls, and because it's a slicker texture, it slides out of his mouth more easily. However, it squeaks when it hits the ground, and he can entertain himself with it for long periods of time. Pros: - Super durable - Squeaker is molded in so it can't come out (unlike the other toys we've bought) - Bright orange is WAY easier to see in the grass than stained green/yellow tennis balls - Easy to clean Cons: - I wish it were slightly larger, because his mouth is so big. No issues with swallowing it or anything, but if they had an XL size (like other super-large sized balls) we'd go for it. Orbee, let us know if you decide to upsize! - It doesn't squeak quite as easily as other squeak balls, but Bruce figured out how to make it work. He sometimes will even hold it against the ground to squeak it faster. - It doesn't squeak as loudly as the faux tennis ball kinds, but wait...that's not a bad thing. It's still loud enough for him to enjoy, without the neighborhood rioting. Overall I can't recommend this toy enough. We feel safe letting him play with it since the squeaker can't come out, and it's paid for itself repeatedly - we were going through a 6-pack of squeaky tennis balls per week (or more!), and haven't had to buy any in the last 2 months because this ball is still in pristine condition.

Poor quality — squeaker lasts 2 minutes
Color: Blue Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
These balls used to be great quality and long lasting. Something changed about a year ago and now the quality is considerably less to include the squeaker becoming inoperable within 2 mins of play. Not sure if the raw materials or the manufacturing process changed, however the decline in quality is obvious. I do not recommend this product to anyone who has a dog that is larger than 10-15 lbs.

STROBE: Favorite Ball, durable, decent battery life
Color: Glow in the Dark Strobe Toy, Size: Medium
*Update since Outward Hound redesign: The new version doesn't seem to light up as consistently on every bounce and seems to light up in a more seizure inducing way (I'm sorry I couldn't think of a better description). The light also seems to die much faster with the new version. The inner light and batter actually popped out its encasement in one ball after about 2 months of use, only by my Golden who doesn't chew particularly forcefully on it. I did notice right away and check regularly for damage, just putting that out there as a warning. It is still by far my dog's favorite ball. Original: This is my Golden Retriever's absolute favorite ball! Particularly the strobe light up ball but she's happy with any Planet Dog ball to the point that she looks at me for the "good ball" to fetch with if i try to have her play with a ball from a different company. Pros: by far my dog's favorite ball - good bounce, and good squish factor yet durable -larger size: safe for large dogs -lights up to see at night -decent battery life -rain does not affect battery Cons: -battery is not replaceable/ rechargeable (though I'm not sure it's an option without seriously altering the design) -regular glow (once battery is dead) is not great -only lights up on a bounce and shortly after that - If your dog bites down particularly forcefully it can displace the battery which typically kills it; if submerged in water (my dog tends to place it in her water bowl when she takes a break while fetching), it is reduces battery life, both make me worry about safety The ball always out lasts the lifespan of the battery for the light, I'd say we average about 1 month per ball while the light works with about 1 hour of use almost everyday. The ball does hold up to some of my dog's friends that are super chewers including one that is a Cane Corso. I don't let them sit and work at chewing it but they definitely squeeze it in their mouths with a good bit of force. My girl is happy to play with the ball even once the battery dies but I prefer to have the light so I can find the ball when needed. The glow color does glow when placed under a flashlight for a few minutes first but I find it doesn't glow as well or as long as other company's glow toys. My dog has a tendency to drown it in her water bowl to keep it nearby or rinse off any dirt and that definitely shortens the battery life but using it in the rain doesn't seem to affect the battery life I think this being my dog's favorite has to do with the good bounce and squeeze factor this ball has. I like that it's slightly bigger than a tennis ball so I'm comfortable with large dogs playing with it. It fits in the "large" chuck it ball launcher. I actually discovered this specific ball when another dog had it and my dog kept taking it instead of her other light up ball that she had played with happily for months.
