Schlumbergera 'Sunset Dancer' is a cultivated hybrid in the Cactaceae family, widely known as a Zygocactus or Christmas Cactus. Its wild ancestors are native to the coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil, where they grow as epiphytes or lithophytes in humid, shaded forests. In these habitats, they establish in mossy tree branches or rocky crevices, receiving filtered light, regular moisture, and excellent drainage.

The stems are made up of flattened, jointed segments (phylloclades) with slight serrations or notches along the edges. 'Sunset Dancer' produces large, tubular flowers with colour gradients that can range from orange to salmon and pink, often blending to resemble the tones of a sunset. The blooms appear at the tips of mature segments and are adapted for pollination by hummingbirds in their native range. The plant grows in an arching to cascading form, making it suitable for hanging baskets or elevated planters.

Flowering is triggered by a combination of shorter day lengths and cooler night temperatures, generally in late autumn to early winter. When provided with consistent seasonal care, this hybrid can reliably produce abundant blooms for many years.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Morning or late afternoon sun can be beneficial, but protect from intense midday light to avoid stem scorch.
  • Water: Keep the potting mix evenly moist during active growth and flowering. After flowering, reduce watering, allowing the top layer of soil to dry before the next application.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Use a pebble tray with water beneath the pot or mist occasionally in dry indoor environments.
  • Media: Plant in a free-draining, slightly acidic mix such as a blend of orchid bark, peat, and perlite to replicate its epiphytic habitat.
  • Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Switch to a high-potassium formula before flowering to promote bud formation.
  • Temperature: Maintain 18–24°C during growth. To initiate budding, provide night temperatures of 12–15°C for several weeks in autumn.
  • Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years after flowering, refreshing the mix and choosing a pot only slightly larger than the existing one.
  • Propagation: Take cuttings of 2–3 joined segments in spring or summer, allow them to callus for 24 hours, then plant in a well-draining mix.

The Future is Now
Format: Hardcover
The author makes a compelling argument that the world is fracturing into two principal trade blocs, the U.S.A bloc and the China bloc. Even cursory review of the daily business news confirms the author's argument is taking shape now. This is an important book for those interested in geopolitics, economics, and even those who are trying to determine where to invest their funds based on changing global dynamics.

Cute book and engaging story
Format: Paperback
My grand daughter reads at a 3rd grade reading level, so doesn't want to read the easy readers but loses interest easily with traditional chapter books. This little book was a perfect fit. She's an axolotl fan so the pictures and the story line kept her engaged. There's even a couple of pages of axolotl facts at the end of the book. Well worth adding to her book shelf!

Quick, fun read
Format: Kindle
I purchased this because my son and I have been raising 2 albino axolotls since 2022. The illustrations are very cute and well done. The story includes a few characters and even though it's so short, there is clear character development. I would recommend this for children under the age of 8 to be read to. With repetition, they will easily be able to read this book (apart from those with reading challenges). My 12 year old read it through in one sitting and added his own unique reading style to it which was really funny. I wouldn't recommend reading this on a small screen as the font is small.
