Vietnamese Perilla Frutescens shiso Beefsteak plant is a fast-growing, aromatic culinary herb that delivers fresh, vibrant flavor straight from your garden to your kitchen. This versatile plant thrives in containers, window boxes, and small-space gardens — ideal for home cooks, urban balcony gardeners, and herb enthusiasts who want restaurant-quality freshness at home.

This variety thrives in USDA zones 3-11 depending on your climate, and adapts beautifully to indoor and outdoor growing. Start from seed for the most rewarding gardening experience — there is nothing quite like nurturing a plant from its very first sprout.

🌱 Step-by-Step Growing Guide

1. Seed Prep and Sowing: Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow after danger of frost has passed. Most herb seeds are tiny — surface sow or barely cover with fine soil.

2. Planting and Container Setup: Full sun to partial shade (4-6+ hours). Thrives in containers (5-10 gallon pots), window boxes, and raised beds. Use rich, well-draining soil. Space plants 6-12 inches apart.

3. Germination and Early Care: Expect sprouts in 7-21 days at 65-75F. Keep soil evenly moist until established. Thin seedlings to proper spacing once they develop true leaves.

4. Growth and Maintenance: Pinch growing tips regularly to encourage bushy growth and more leaves. Fertilize lightly every 3-4 weeks. Remove flower buds to extend leaf production.

5. Harvesting: Begin harvesting outer leaves when plants reach 6-8 inches tall. Use the cut-and-come-again method — the more you harvest, the more it produces. Pick in the morning for peak flavor.

💡 Pro Tips for Every State

  • Midwest and Northeast: Start indoors under grow lights in March for transplants ready by Memorial Day. Bring containers indoors before first frost.
  • South and Southwest: Direct sow in early spring or fall for nearly year-round harvests. Provide afternoon shade in peak summer heat.
  • Container and Balcony Growers: Perfect for 5-10 gallon containers on balconies and windowsills. Harvest daily for the freshest flavor.

🍳 Easy Recipes and Creative Uses

  • Fresh Herb Stir-Fry: Toss freshly picked leaves with garlic, sesame oil, and protein for an aromatic weeknight dinner
  • Herb Pesto or Compound Butter: Blend fresh leaves with olive oil, garlic, and nuts for a vibrant sauce or flavor-rich butter
  • Garnish & Fresh Wraps: Add whole or chopped leaves to soups, salads, rice dishes, and spring rolls for instant flavor

📋 Care and Storage

  • Store unused seeds in a cool, dry place — sealed container in the fridge extends viability 2-3+ years
  • Water consistently — morning watering prevents fungal issues and keeps plants hydrated through the day
  • Mulch around plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature
  • Check your USDA hardiness zone at planting time for the best results in your specific region

🫖 Cold Brew & Iced Tea Innovation

Discover a completely different flavor profile through cold brewing, which extracts sweetness and smooth body while dramatically reducing bitterness and caffeine content by up to 60%. Place 1.5x the normal amount of tea leaves in a glass pitcher, fill with cold or room-temperature filtered water, and refrigerate for 8-12 hours (overnight is perfect). Strain through a fine mesh or cheesecloth for a crystal-clear, naturally sweet concentrate that transforms into extraordinary iced tea. Enhance your cold brew with fresh fruit slices, cucumber ribbons, or herb sprigs like mint and lemongrass for spa-inspired refreshment. Summer entertaining elevates when you prepare flavored ice cubes using brewed tea — they add flavor as they melt rather than diluting your drink. Store cold-brewed tea in sealed glass containers for up to 5 days in the refrigerator, making weekly meal prep effortless.

🌿 Tea Garden & Growing Your Own

Growing tea at home connects you to a 5,000-year global tradition and provides the freshest possible cup. Camellia sinensis plants thrive in acidic soil (pH 4.5-6.5), partial shade, and consistent moisture — conditions similar to azaleas and blueberries. Start plants from cuttings or small nursery specimens, spacing 3-5 feet apart in beds amended with pine bark mulch and composted leaves. Plants begin yielding harvestable leaves in their third year, with peak production from years 5-30. Harvest the terminal bud plus two leaves ("two and a bud") every 7-14 days during the growing season for the finest quality. Process your own green tea by pan-firing fresh leaves in a dry skillet at medium heat for 2-3 minutes to halt oxidation, then gently rolling and drying. Herbal tea gardens require even less effort — grow chamomile, peppermint, lemon balm, and lavender in sunny borders for an endless supply of caffeine-free infusions that cost a fraction of retail prices.

Super cute
Color: Bunny (Mauve), Size: Small
Super cute and fuzzy. Definitely perfect size for a puppy and not too loud. The fur is very soft and the nose is sown on not a hard piece that can be chewed on. Very good quality too.

Normally amazing
Color: Spiky Ball (Blue, Orange), Size: Medium
We have purchased these slightly spiky dog balls several times for our very strong jaw heavy chewer dogs and they’ve been amazing. They don’t break down they don’t get torn apart the squeakers don’t even pop out of them. So we ordered another package because we’ve lost a few outside to the lawnmower… oops and the package that got delivered today had only one ball that squeaks and the other does not. THIS IS A PROBLEM ! Unfortunately my female dog got to the new squeaking ball first and my male got to the non-squeaking ball and he was NOT happy. Basically once they claim a ball it’s theirs and the other dogs don’t go near the ball they claimed. So he’s following my female around and every time she squeaks the ball and I’m just waiting for him to attempt to take it from her causing damage to her. Normally… These are amazingly fun, tough, durable but also squeaking balls (that’s rare in a tough ball) that my dogs absolutely love. This time just got a bad batch I guess. When they squeak the dogs LOVE them. After several months of play the squeaker might break inside of the ball but the ball never comes apart or gets damaged. And we as the owners love that they don’t break down are not able to be ripped or torn even by our very strong jawed and big jaw muscle dogs. They are also great for in the house play because they’re small enough that they fit completely inside our dog‘s mouth but obviously not small enough to get swallowed so when we throw them in the house for fetch the dogs can jump up and catch them fully in their mouth so they don’t cause any damage to the walls when they hit the walls. They’re not super heavy but they’re incredibly durable. Definitely worth the price especially if you have heavy chewers or big jaw muscle dogs.

Best fun indestructible toy
Color: Crinkle Duck (Yellow), Size: Large
Truly indestructible no matter how much our oittie tries. She has owned it for three months works at destroying every day with no success. She carries it everywhere. Best purchase for chewer, more fun than the popular rubber heavy duty toy. Do not hesitate your pup will thank you for this fun distraction.

My dog loves this toy!
Color: Bunny (Gray), Size: Large, Color: Bunny (Gray), Size: Large
High quality, big toy, perfect for a medium to large size dog. After a few months of serious chewing I had to buy another one, but well worth the money! Rocky loves it.

Great toy but if your dog is an aggressive chewer, please think twice.
Color: Crinkle Chicken (Brown), Size: Large
I received this on May 23rd and on June 8th, after playing with this thing every day, our recently acquired 36 lb dog finally ripped it open and got out all the plastic and the squeaky part. Lily Belle will miss you, chicken. Lily loooooved this toy! She'd toss it in the air, chew on it, pull it with her teeth etc. but as much as she loved it, we won't replace it. It's just not durable enough for her. If your dog is an aggressive chewer, you might want to try a different toy. I hate that this lasted just a smidge over two weeks because Lily seemed to truly enjoy this toy. RIP, squeaky chicken!
