Areca triandra - Clumping Betel Nut

Areca triandra, commonly known as the Clumping Betel Nut, is a graceful, clumping palm with multiple slender trunks and arching green fronds. Known for its delicate appearance and small stature, this tropical palm adds a lush, natural look to landscapes and can even be grown indoors in bright spaces. Reaching heights of 3–5 metres, Areca triandra is ideal for creating a dense screen or natural privacy hedge in gardens and large containers.

Position

Triandra Palm thrives in a partial shade position and prefers warm, humid conditions. It is well-suited to tropical and subtropical climates, although it can tolerate brief periods of cooler temperatures. For best results, plant in a sheltered location to protect it from strong winds that may damage the fronds.

Growth

This slow to moderate-growing palm reaches a mature height of 3–5 meters with a spread of about 2–3 metres, forming a dense clump of slender stems and feathery fronds. Its multi-trunked, clumping growth habit makes it an excellent choice for natural screens, hedges, or as a specimen plant in tropical gardens.

Planting Guide

Areca triandra grows best in well-drained, rich soil that retains moisture. Plant in spring or early summer, allowing space for its natural spread. For container planting, use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix, and place in a bright spot with indirect light. Water thoroughly upon planting, and add a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Plant Care

Water regularly to maintain consistently moist soil, particularly during dry spells. Triandra Palm enjoys high humidity, so misting the fronds or using a humidifier is recommended if grown indoors. Fertilise every 3–4 months with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for palms to encourage healthy growth. Remove any dead or yellowing fronds to maintain a tidy appearance and promote new growth.

Delicious, healthy lunches!
Really tasty mackerel. I concur with other reviewers, it's a healthy slab of fish I like to drop on a bed of crushed corn chips, fork-flake it and chow down. Better than just about any other off the shelf grocery store brand.
