Great Burdock is a traditional medicinal plant with broad elephant ears and a deep, nutritious taproot. It is reported to be supportive of the liver, healing for skin blemishes, and cooling for inflammation. In Japanese cooking it is called gobo, and provides a crunchy, earthy, carrot-like quality to soups, stir-fries, shredded salads, sushi, and tempura. This biennial member of the aster family can grow taller than you in the second year, spouting a spray of thistle-like purple flowers that make clingy seed pods, which were the inspiration for zippers. Dig the roots for food and medicine in the fall of the first year. This will also keep it from reseeding itself in the second year.

Seeds per pack: 100

Germination rate: 98% on 01/23/2025

Planting / harvesting notes

Sow seeds 1/4" deep directly in the ground in early spring - germination can take some time. Sow every 6" and thin to one plant every 24-36". Keep moist until germination. Root harvest is difficult - prepare as if digging up a tree. Lift roots in the fall of the first year.

Seed keeping notes

Allow seed pods to dry out and begin to open, releasing the first seeds. Wear protective clothing, as the hairs from the pods can irritate like hairs on your neck after a visit to the hairdressers, but worse. Cut the seedheads below the lowest ripe seed pods and whack in a bucket, releasing the seeds. Alternatively, you can use a rolling pin over the pods to release the seeds. Winnow using breath, wind, or fans to remove the fine, irritating dust. This plant will reseed itself, so if you are concerned about having it forever in your garden, do not allow it to go to seed.

Adorable but not holding up well
Color: Green, Pattern Name: Puppy
They’re super cute, have a great variety, but my puppy whose 2 months old and only 9/10 lbs has chewed through the plastic parts already and it’s only been a week or so, they arnt holding up very well for larger breed puppies.

Fun for Pups and You Can Hide a Treat Inside!
These chew toys are fun for my pup! He especially loves that I can hide a treat inside, which keeps him interested and entertained. They’re a nice size for small dogs and puppies, and I also like the light colors because they’re easy to spot when they end up under the sofa because somehow they always do!

Cute toys but not for tough chewers. Might be too thick for my 6 lb girl
These are fun for the right dog, but not a good choice for all. They're a good size for medium dogs and some small dogs, but "small" is relative I guess and the size of this toy won't work for all small dogs. I definitely expected these to be smaller, though I measured and they are the size shown in the listing (for those in the US it's about 2 1/4" by 4 3/4"). I think one thing that surprised me is how tall (?) they are, or maybe thick? They show two measurements in the listing but not the other. That's the one that makes a big difference with small dogs, especially really small dogs like mine. I have a 6 lb Maltese with a teeny tiny mouth so I have to find toys that she can fit her teeny mouth around. She loves toys with nubbies and has other "spiky" toys like this, but so far hasn't been too interested and I wonder if it's because it's too thick. If she doesn't give them a try we have doggy friends who are big enough for them, more the 12-16 lb size. There was a bit of smell on them when I first opened the package, but after giving them a quick wash (which I do with all chew toys like this) the smell was completely gone. Whatever it was must have just been on the outside because it hasn't come back. I can't really say how durable these are, but I doubt they'd be good for tough chewers. They're not super soft but in the world of dog chewing they're medium at best. They're very cute and if you have a medium to soft chewer they could be a great addition to the toy basket. They also have a hole down the middle which could be filled with something to lick out, another way to keep them busy. Can't say any of this makes them worth the rather high price asked though.
