Sweet Pepper Balalaika is an excellent choice for making your own dried Paprika powder for truly authentic Hungarian goulash recipes. Of course, they can still be eaten as you would with any other sweet pepper, having a mild peppery taste with no heat, and indeed are a mouthwatering choice when stuffed and roasted.

Paprika peppers can be harvested when they turn completely solid in colour. They do vary in colour, so know what colour your ripe paprika should be. The paprika’s colouring is related to its flavour. Paprika peppers that are red are usually the sweetest, whereas the brown or golden-yellow paprika peppers are the hottest. That pattern follows with ground paprika as well, so next time you are browsing the spice aisle, you will be able to decipher your paprikas!

How to dry Paprika Peppers:
You can skip the spice aisle and grind your own paprika spice by drying your own homegrown paprika peppers. Dry your peppers the old-fashioned way by hanging them on a string outside until all of the moisture is gone. Or spread the peppers out on baking sheets and place them in a 150˚F oven. Leave the door open a crack to allow moisture to escape. Check on the peppers every 30 minutes and rotate and remove the ones that are dry. Depending on the peppers, drying in the oven can take 1-2 hours.

When your peppers are dry and crumbly, put them in a coffee grinder until the peppers are ground down to a coarse powder.

To ensure a good crop, it is best to sow with heat early and grow in a greenhouse/polytunnel.

They do sound fiddly but treat like a greenhouse tomato and you should be rewarded with lovely juicy peppers....with the added bonus of your own dried paprika too!

Sweet Pepper Balalaika Vegetable Seed Information

Seed Quantity: Approx 20 seeds per pack.
Site:
Greenhouse/polytunnel
When to Sow
February to April (Best in March).
How to Sow:
Sow in seed trays/modules in the greenhouse and lightly cover with compost and gently water. They need heat to germinate so place in heated propagator at about 28C (or an airing cupboard but remove seeds as soon as they sprout and give them warmth & light). They can be slow to germinate from 21-28 days. Pot on into 9cm pots when a set of true leaves have grown and keep at a constant temperature of 20C. Pot on again into 2L pots when they have rooted well. Either plant out in June or into 4/5L pots or the soil in a greenhouse in May/June.
Care:
They can be left to grow as cordons with supports and just pinch out the top when they reach the greenhouse roof. But the best method is to pinch out the growing tip and produce a smaller bushier plant that will only need a little staking and produce earlier fruits which should ripen easier. Water with a nitrogen-rich feed (tomato feed) once a week when fruiting has begun.
Harvest: June to September.

Stopped cutting cans after 31 days
Color: Green
This quit working exactly 31 days after delivery. Since the day of delivery counted as day 1, I am out of luck on my purchase.

Mixed results using this auto can opener...
Color: Green
I had high hopes for this can opener, but was let down. This can opener failed me half of the times I tried to use it. For some reason it wouldn't cut through the paper surrounding the cans. I tried it on small, medium and large cans. It worked best on larger cans. I got it because I liked the idea of opening cans without having to contend with the sharp lids that inevitably fall back into the opened cans. It is unsanitary at best and a safety hazard at worst. On the plus side it is rechargeable, so no battery worries there. It fits nicely in the hand for ease of use. It appears to be of sturdy construction, so it's a high quality item. And being small it will store easily. The price is right and it represents a good value for your hard earned dollars.

Hands Free Operation; Safe Cutting
Color: Green
I used to have a manual (as in turn-the-crank) side-cutting can opener really liked it. It eventually wore out and I had relegated myself to the standard hand-crank top-cut version that often left a sharp lid and sometimes a little burr or sharp point where the cut wasn't complete and the you had to the tear/bend the lid off. With this mostly hands-free Side Cut Can Opener, sharp edges will be few, if any. I say "mostly hands-free" because you do have to position the opener on the can and push the button to start it and, when it finishes, you have to push the button again to tell it to stop. On the demo can in my video, the lip was such that the cut was right through that edge such that there were no sharp edges. It is possible that some cans may be designed such that the cutter falls below that rim and cuts the can edge in a way that leaves dull lid but a sharp can. These should be rare, but good to watch out for in case you get one. Always assume edges are sharp until you verify otherwise. You'll note in my video that the lid was a little difficult to remove. Some of that may be learning curve with this new opener, and some it may be that is just how it is! I accept that and choose to move forward using this new, safer can opener. Recommended.

Very dangerous metal shavings!!!
Negative stars if I could. This is a very dangerous product. It worked well for a while. But then it quit effectively removing the lid instead I got little tiny shavings of metal around the edge. These shavings of metal go into the food and very dangerous. So this was a waste of money and incredibly dangerous. I am throwing it in the trash today.
