A fun and distinctive Alocasia, Alocasia macrorrhizos ‘Stingray’ is named for its uniquely shaped leaves, which resemble a stingray with a long “tail” tip. The bright green foliage sits on upright stems, creating a playful yet architectural look. Fast-growing in the right conditions, this plant makes a bold statement and is a great conversation piece.

Scientific Name
Alocasia macrorrhizos ‘Stingray’ (‘large-rooted Alocasia’)

Common Name
Stingray Alocasia

Origin
Derived from Alocasia species native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some gentle direct sun, but avoid harsh midday rays. Lower light may slow growth and reduce leaf size.

Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter, but do not let the plant dry out completely.

Humidity
Thrives in high humidity. Ideal for bathrooms, near a humidifier, or grouped with other plants. Low humidity can lead to browning edges or leaf loss.

Soil
Use a well-draining, airy mix. A chunky aroid mix with bark, perlite, and compost works well to retain moisture while allowing airflow to the roots.

Food
Feed every 2–3 waters during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold drafts.

Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
If your Alocasia drops a leaf, it’s often just part of its natural cycle – focus on consistent warmth, humidity, and watering to support new growth.

Extras
This plant can go semi-dormant in cooler months, slowing growth or losing a leaf or two before bouncing back in spring.

Did You Know?
The unusual “tail” on each leaf is what gives this plant its stingray-like appearance, making it one of the most recognisable Alocasia varieties.
