False Shamrock (Oxalis triangularis)

False Shamrock is a distinctive bulbous houseplant valued for its triangular purple foliage, delicate flowers, and compact container-friendly habit. Its deep purple to burgundy leaves fold and open with changes in light, giving the plant a lively, responsive quality indoors or in seasonal outdoor containers. Pale pink to white flowers rise above the foliage during active growth, adding a soft accent without overpowering the dramatic leaves. With bright indirect light, well-drained soil, and careful watering, False Shamrock brings rich color and fine texture to windowsills, tabletops, patios, and mixed container displays.

Distinctive Features

False Shamrock produces clover-like leaves made up of triangular leaflets that are typically deep purple, burgundy, or maroon. The foliage opens in bright conditions and folds at night or during low light, creating natural movement that makes the plant especially engaging up close. Small white to pale pink flowers appear on slender stems during active growth and contrast softly with the dark foliage. This plant grows from small bulb-like rhizomes and may enter a rest period when conditions change, then regrow from its underground storage structures when growth resumes.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Grows best in bright indirect light indoors or partial shade outdoors, with protection from harsh afternoon sun that can scorch the foliage.
  • Soil: Prefers a light, well-drained potting mix or garden soil that holds modest moisture without staying soggy.
  • Water: Water moderately during active growth, allowing the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings, and reduce watering during dormancy.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy outdoors in USDA Zones 8 to 11, while colder climates should grow it as a houseplant or seasonal container plant.
  • Mature Size: Typically reaches about 6 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, depending on light, container size, and growing conditions.
  • Habit: Forms a compact, clumping bulbous perennial with delicate stems, triangular foliage, and a low mounding outline.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a dark foliage focal point in small containers, tabletop planters, windowsill displays, mixed houseplant groupings, or shaded patio pots where its purple leaves can stand out.
  • Houseplant: Grow indoors near a bright window where its compact size, colorful foliage, and light-responsive movement can be enjoyed up close.
  • Container Planting: Use in decorative pots where the dark foliage can contrast with lighter containers, pale flowers, or bright companion plants.
  • Seasonal Accent: Add to shaded porch planters, patio containers, or mixed annual displays during frost-free weather.
  • Gift Plant: Use as a compact gift plant for desks, shelves, windowsills, and small indoor spaces where a colorful plant is easy to place.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water when the upper soil begins to dry, then allow excess water to drain fully so the roots stay moist but not waterlogged.
  • Light Care: Provide bright filtered light for best foliage color and move plants away from harsh direct sun if leaves scorch or fade.
  • Dormancy: If the plant naturally declines or rests, reduce watering, remove tired foliage, and resume normal care when fresh growth appears.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer, using a modest approach to avoid excessive soft growth.
  • Division: Divide crowded clumps during dormancy or repotting by separating the small rhizomes into fresh well-drained mix.
  • Cleanup: Remove yellowing leaves and spent flowers as needed to keep the plant looking fresh and tidy.

Why Choose False Shamrock?

  • Purple Foliage: Displays deep purple to burgundy triangular leaves that provide rich color without relying on flowers.
  • Light-Responsive Leaves: Opens and folds its foliage with changes in light, adding movement and personality to indoor displays.
  • Soft Flowers: Produces pale pink to white blooms that contrast gently with the dark foliage.
  • Compact Size: Fits windowsills, tabletops, shelves, desks, patio pots, and small mixed containers with ease.
  • Container Friendly: Grows well in pots when given bright indirect light, good drainage, and moderate watering during active growth.

False Shamrock is an excellent choice for gardeners who want a compact plant with rich foliage color, delicate flowers, and easy container appeal. Its triangular purple leaves, light-responsive movement, pale blooms, and flexible indoor or seasonal outdoor use make it a charming option for bright windows, patios, tabletops, and decorative planters.

Great for big dogs
Size: Medium, Number of Items: 1
Our pup is now 15 months old (nearly 110 lb and still growing). We got this ball when he was 3 or 4 months old. GOODS - - Our pup fetches with extreme drive, and the rope helps him quickly snatch the ball off the ground (versus a tennis ball, in which we are worried he will go head over heels at times) - Our pup also loves to play fetch in the water, and this ball floats great and again, the rope gives another point to bite onto - The yellow color is easy to see, even in grass - Our pup typically fetches the ball, and leaves the rope mostly out of his mouth. So, throwing the ball doesn't result in saliva-covered hands - It's pretty easy to throw the ball 50', and possible to throw it 100' - It doesn't roll/bounce, so if you are for example playing fetch on your front lawn and are concerned with a tennis ball rolling into the street, this one alleviates that issue - Our pup is spoiled and has several balls. This is absolutely his go to ball. We have woken up in the morning before to see him standing next to the bed with the ball in his mouth, asking us to get up and play. BADS - - Occasionally when he goes to fetch it, he will step on the rope as he tries to pull up on the ball. - We have gotten this ball stuck in trees multiple times. In fact, there is one stuck on the roof of our church from playing fetch on the lawn there. :-/ Not a fault of the ball, but if you start whipping it around like nunchucks, it might not go where you want. - The near max you can through this ball is 100'. And since it doesn't roll/bounce, throw distance is throttled. We often play fetch in a local baseball field, and have no issue wearing him out with this ball. However, if you are planning on throwing a ball the distance of half a football field, you might want to consider something else. SIZE - - We purchased both the medium and the large. Even though our pup is huge and can fit a soccer ball in his mouth, he still prefers the medium. It's easier for him to get in his mouth and breath while running back. The medium is the size of an orange, whereas the large is the size of a grapefruit. DURABILITY - - We have gone through about 4 of these balls, BUT this is because we lost 3 of them. We believe he dropped one out of the car window while we were driving, one is on the roof of our church, and I forget about the other one. On the first one we had, the stitching behind the black tape was down to a few threads after about 5 months. Given duration we use these balls (every day) and the joy he gets from them, I feel the durability is good for the price. - We do play tug with the ball at times, and no issues there Enjoy!

Good but better options out there.
Good ball, but is a cheaper version of the Foamster sold online. The rope is cheap and comes apart, and can be abrasive to a dogs mouth. The Foamster uses a higher quality ball and are more durable and use grippy biothane straps rather than cheap rope. They are also made to order in the USA with lots of fun colors. Worth the extra money if your dog likes these balls.

Fun toy for fetch
Size: Medium, Number of Items: 1
Daisy loves this toy. I found it from her dog trainer, and it makes rewarding her with a quick tug of war and fetch really easy. Also it’s shockingly durable. It looks like foam, but she has not destroyed this one.

My dog LOVES this tiny tug ball
Size: Medium(6")
A lot smaller than I was expecting.. BUT my dog doesn’t mind at all. She seriously loves this thing. It goes flat fairly quickly, but that’s what happens with all of her soccer balls, no matter the size. She’s a pitbul catahoula mix and has a strong bite. Considering my dogs chewing abilities, I’m fairly impressed by the durability of the ball, though she chewed through all but one of the rope handles in about 2 seconds. All that said, it’s one of her favorite toys(she’s 13 years old)
