🌿 Ficus lyrata — Fiddle Leaf Fig

Ficus lyrata, more commonly known as the Fiddle Leaf Fig, is one of the most iconic and visually striking houseplants in modern interior design. Native to the tropical rainforests of western and central Africa, this evergreen tree has become a favourite for its dramatic foliage and sculptural form. Its signature feature is its large, violin-shaped leaves — hence the name “fiddle leaf” — which are glossy, leathery, and heavily veined, with undulating edges. The plant can be grown as a single tall stem with a crown of leaves or pruned to encourage a bushier, branching structure. In ideal conditions, it can grow to over 2–3 metres indoors, making it a bold, upright feature plant. Though slightly more demanding than other indoor foliage plants, Ficus lyrata rewards consistent care with impressive growth and strong visual impact. It is particularly well suited to bright, high-ceilinged spaces, modern interiors, and design-conscious homes and offices.

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Indoors: Prefers bright, indirect light. Thrives near east- or west-facing windows.

  • Direct sun: Tolerates some direct morning light, but harsh midday sun can scorch the leaves.

  • Too little light: Leads to leaf drop, slowed growth, and legginess.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 18–25°C (65–77°F)

  • Minimum temperature: Avoid exposure below 12°C (54°F)

  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Benefits from regular misting or use of a humidifier in dry indoor environments.

💧 Watering Needs

  • Watering frequency: Water when the top 5–7 cm of soil feels dry. Typically once a week during growing season.

  • Tip: Avoid overwatering. Allow excess water to drain freely and never let the plant sit in water.

  • Seasonal change: Water less frequently in winter as growth slows.

🪴 Soil & Repotting

  • Soil type: Use a well-draining, aerated potting mix. A blend of indoor plant compost, perlite, and pine bark works well.

  • pH: Neutral to slightly acidic (6.0–7.0)

  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years, or when root-bound. Repot in spring to avoid transplant shock.

🌱 Feeding

  • During growing season (spring–summer): Feed every 4–6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser or slow-release pellets.

  • Autumn–winter: Pause feeding unless the plant is actively growing in warm, bright conditions.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Pruning: Prune to control height or encourage branching. Cut just above a leaf node; new shoots will develop below the cut.

  • Leaf care: Wipe leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their natural gloss.

  • Rotation: Rotate the plant every few weeks to encourage even, upright growth.

🌾 Propagation

  • Stem cuttings: Take healthy tip cuttings (around 15–20 cm), remove lower leaves, and root in water or moist compost.

  • Air layering: A reliable method for more mature plants — especially if they become too tall or leggy.

🐛 Pests & Problems

  • Common pests: Mealybugs, scale insects, spider mites, and fungus gnats (especially in damp conditions)

  • Symptoms: Yellowing leaves, sticky residue, or webbing may indicate pests.

  • Treatment: Use neem oil, insecticidal soap, or gently wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

  • Common issues:

    • Brown leaf edges: Often due to low humidity or inconsistent watering.

    • Leaf drop: Usually caused by sudden changes in environment, overwatering, or low light.

🧤 Toxicity & Safety

  • Toxicity: Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Sap may also irritate the skin.

  • Pet-safe tip: Keep out of reach of pets and children who may chew on the foliage.

🏡 Indoor Care Highlights

  • A bold statement plant ideal for large living rooms, offices, hallways, and atriums.

  • Best displayed in decorative pots with good drainage and a sturdy base.

  • Pairs well with modern furniture, natural textures, and minimalist interiors.

  • Can be trained into tree or bush form depending on pruning style.

  • Not for the faint-hearted — thrives on routine care and consistent conditions, but well worth the effort.

Works Great & Very Practical for Indoor Potty Training
Pattern Name: Detachable high wall
I really love this pee pad tray. We have a similar one from another retailer that has worked well, and I wanted a second tray for our multi-story home. My puppy had no trouble using this right away since he’s already trained to use a pad when we’re not able to take him out. The design keeps his paws dry, which I appreciate, and it even came with wee pads included. The splash guard is a nice touch for male dogs my puppy isn’t lifting his leg yet, but it will definitely be useful later on. Just a note: if your dog tends to have softer stools, cleaning the small holes in the tray might take a little extra effort. For us, that hasn’t been an issue, and the tray is easy to rinse off when needed. Overall, this is a much cleaner and more reliable option compared to indoor grass pads or loose training pads that some puppies chew up. I’m really happy with it and would recommend it.

Reliable, No‑Mess Pads That Actually Work
Size: X-Large, Style: 40 Count
I’ve tried a bunch of different puppy pads, but these Amazon Basics ones are easily the most reliable. The 5‑layer design really does make a difference—no leaking, no soggy spots, and the quick‑dry top layer keeps my puppy from tracking wet footprints around the house. They absorb way more than I expected, and the plastic backing has never let anything seep through to the floor. The size is perfect for daily training, and the pads stay flat instead of bunching up. My puppy took to them right away, and cleanup is super easy. For the price and the quality, these are honestly the best value pads I’ve found. Highly recommend for puppies, small dogs, or even senior dogs who need a little extra help.

They're okay-ish. Not suitable for a lot of liquid.
Size: Regular, Style: 100 Count
I use these for my opossums. They work okay-ish, but I continue to use them for the quantity and price. They're not very large animals. Make sure you are changing them out after a single pee. These really can not handle a lot of liquid. My girls both refused litter training, and so puppy pads are my only option. If your animal has large pees, I do not recommend these because it will not be able to absorb it all, and you're gonna have a mess! Thats the word I have been looking for. They can't absorb a large amount of liquid.
