About Chinese Chestnut Tree

The Chinese Chestnut (Castanea mollissima) brings back the joy of roasted chestnuts without the heartbreak that wiped out American chestnuts a century ago. This fast-growing shade tree resists chestnut blight, the devastating fungal disease that eliminated billions of native chestnut trees, while producing generous crops of sweet, edible nuts that rival anything you'd find at a gourmet market.

Key Features

Year-Round Beauty and Function

In late spring, the tree erupts with long, creamy-white catkins that release a sweet, slightly musky fragrance. These showy flower spikes attract bees and other pollinators before developing into the spiny burrs that protect developing chestnuts through summer. The coarse-textured, oblong leaves create dense shade during hot months, then turn golden-yellow in fall just as the burrs split open to release their glossy brown treasures.

The broad, rounded canopy provides substantial shade, making Chinese Chestnut an excellent choice for large properties, acreages, or anywhere you need a hardworking tree that earns its keep. Unlike many nut trees, it grows relatively quickly, reaching 15-20 feet in 10 years under good conditions.

Why Chinese Chestnut Wins Over American Chestnut

American Chestnut trees once dominated Eastern forests until chestnut blight arrived from Asia in the early 1900s. Chinese Chestnut evolved alongside this fungus and developed natural resistance, making it the practical choice for home orchards and landscapes. The nuts are slightly smaller than the legendary American chestnuts but just as delicious, and you'll actually get to harvest them instead of watching the tree succumb to disease.

Growing and Care Guide

Harvesting Your Own Chestnuts

Chinese Chestnuts typically begin producing nuts 3-5 years after planting, with production increasing as the tree matures. Each spiny burr contains 2-3 chestnuts that fall to the ground when ripe in September and October. Gather them promptly since squirrels, deer, and other wildlife find them irresistible. The sweet, starchy nuts are perfect for roasting, pureeing into soups, or using in traditional chestnut stuffing recipes.

For reliable nut production, plant two different Chinese Chestnut trees or cultivars within 200 feet of each other. While Chinese Chestnuts are self-fertile to some degree, cross-pollination dramatically increases your harvest.

Why Choose Chinese Chestnut

This is a tough, adaptable tree that handles urban conditions, poor soil, and summer heat without complaint. Once established, it needs little from you beyond the occasional watering during drought and an annual spring feeding. The reward is decades of shade and bushels of nuts that connect you to an agricultural tradition that stretches back thousands of years. If you have room for a large tree and want something useful as well as beautiful, Chinese Chestnut delivers.

Horrible taste
Size: 320 Count (Pack of 1)
These have a horrible taste, even if you swallow them quickly. It will linger in your mouth for a while. They are cheap but I’m not buying them anymore.

Great Product, Works as Advertised
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 1.46 Pound (Pack of 1)
This product works exactly as described. It makes BM's smoother and gentler. I personally use the unflavored, no sweeteners added version, and honestly, it does not taste very good, but I feel that the results are worth it, and I do not like adding extra sweeteners or flavorings to my diet. I have used this product for many years and have found that about 1 1/2 to 2 tbsps in 12 ounces of water works the best for me. You will need to experiment a bit to find the ratio that works best for you. I recommend that you start on the low side and gradually increase the amount of Metamucil as needed.

Healthy, Effective, and great when mixed with Splenda and Koolaid mix. The best of many options I've tried.
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 1.46 Pound (Pack of 1)
I've sampled a few different varieties of fiber supplements, including both Benefiber and off-brands, and I found that Metamucil provided the most fiber in the least offensive beverage. Compared to the other brands, this stuff is smoother textured, and goes down easier, as a sort of happy medium between the grittier supplements and the thicker ones. What about effectiveness? I have apocalyptic IBS, and since starting to take this stuff regularly (one giant glass every morning and evening), my BMs have been much more regular, and more manageable. Flare-ups happen less, and it even seems to do a decent job when taken with meals of cutting the hit to my stomach and gut. I tend to take more than the recommended amount, with an even larger serving of water, as I feel like it helps me stay hydrated and full throughout the day. I started taking the classic orange Metamucil, but although I really liked the superior flavor (rather like Orange Tang) it packed several times more sugar in each serving than fiber, so while it was great for digestive health, the overall health impact was too negative. I also sampled the sugar-free berry flavors, but found that, although it was ostensibly healthier, the flavor wasn't great, and in addition it suffered from the aspartame aftertaste and further effects (Aspartame gives me headaches). So this was a dilemma for me. What to do? I actually wrote to Metamucil about it, and they recommended this product. The downside is that it comes with absolutely no flavor, so you need to provide your own in order to mask the texture (I wouldn't dream of trying to mix this in plain water--yuck!) The upside is they pack 100+ servings into a container, and you really are free to blend it into whatever suits your fancy. Obviously if you mix it with something like orange juice, then you're already negating the benefits of this stuff over the sugary orange flavor, but I've personally found a much better way. I like to mix this stuff with Kool-aid mix and Splenda (Sucralose) sweetener. I buy a ton of Splenda and kool-aid as it mixes up tasting sweet, like sugar, but without the calories or aftertaste. You can dump a spoonful of this stuff into a glass of splenda-koolaid, or just dump 8 servings worth of this stuff in with a packet of koolaid powder and a cup of splenda, and then just mix it up and spoon it into water as needed. Better tasting, sugar-free and packed with good useful fiber. EDIT: I wish I could subscribe to this stuff. Price of splenda has gone up, but I've figured out thatyou can just dump 7 packets of koolaid mix and 7 dashes of sucralose into a container of this and shake it up.

#1 for #2's
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 1.46 Pound (Pack of 1)
I like the lack of sweeteners and flavor. I just want the stuff that helps me poop. There is some citric acid in it (no idea why) which gives it a mildly acidic taste. Other than that, it does the trick.
