  • Highway 3

This was the first time we’ve taken HWY 3 all the way home from Lethbridge. Unfortunately it was very smoky due to several active fires and we rushed home to try to avoid any road closures. We did get some fruit along the way, but will have to try again another time. Here’s Manning Park.

The sun was red in the sky at 5PM.

We could see the Hope fire as we approached on the highway and this was where we were concerned about getting stuck.

While it was burning uncontrolled, it was far enough up the mountain and away from the highway that it wasn’t a concern just yet.

What we did learn is that taking photos with a long lens out the front window of a car as we drive 110 km/hr does not work particularly well the closer you get and with any curves.

  • Beavers

There are beavers at Burnaby Lake.

We see them almost every time we walk.

    image

Yes, that means you should prepare for a LOT of beaver posts.

We have only seen two, but we think they might have kits in the lodge.

    image

Even the adults are quite cute.

    image

They see us too, but they do not care.

    image

They don’t even care about dogs.

    image

They just want to find more sticks.

    Sticks are delicious.

    image

We assume. We haven’t tried to eat any because we don’t want an angry beaver.

  • Other Burnaby Lake Wildlife

We are getting good at taking not-quite-good photos of wildlife at Burnaby Lake.

    image

Here’s a slightly blurry bunny facing slightly away from you.

    image

And here’s a more blurry muskrat swimming away from you.

    image

Muskrats only come out at dusk and tend to hide in the trees, so they’re pretty hard to get.

    image

These birds are around all the time.

    image

But they’re pretty boring when they’re not flying.

    image

And pretty hard to catch when they are.

    image

    Ducks are similarly boring.

    image

    Unless they’ve just ducked.

    image

    Then they’re wet.

  • Beaver Picking up Groceries

It’s hard work to get groceries when you’re a beaver.

    image

The store doesn’t sell trees so you have to chop them down yourself.image

Sometimes there are fences between the tree and the water.

    image

Those slow him down a lot.

    image

Then he has to tow the whole thing back home.

    image

    With his teeth.

    image

And he never remembers to bring a grocery bag.

    image

Sometimes they take more reasonably sized loads.

    image

They take their sticks back to the lodge.

    image

Then they dive down to get inside.

  • Eagle

An eagle hung out near our place a couple times.

    image

One time he was on the far away tree facing us.

    image

    He made some funny faces.

    image

    Then he got all flooffy

    image

Another time he was closer with his butt facing us.

    image

That didn’t stop him from looking at us though.

    image

There would be better pictures if we hadn’t had COVID. He visited once when we didn’t have the energy to get the camera out at all.

    image

He could spin his head all the way around.

    image

    He also looked down.
